I suppose you’re already thinking of staying in Sulina. If you’re not sure yet, then that’s where I recommend you start the journey because that’s where all major tracks start from, and there’s a pelican colony like five minutes from the city or so.

With the accommodation, don’t worry, you’ll be bombarded with offers the second you step off the boat. You’ll also find offers for bird watching tours, fishing and everything. For very good prices too

If you don’t want to take your bets though, go directly to Perla Sulina. I’ve a few friends who stayed there last year and had only great things to say. It has awesome rooms for about 30 euros a night and they organize their own tours to Lake Rosu, Letea forest, Cardon, the pelican colony, that island that is just forming 1 km north of the city and a few others. They’ve got some of the most knowledgeable guys in Sulina, so you’ll get to see everything. They have their own website, but it’s not in English. Besides Sulina, you can go to Sfantul Gheorghe and stay at the Green Village. The place is just perfect. Here’s their website (http://www.greenvillage.ro/trasee_turistice_en) with nice maps of the trails you can follow. One of them actually takes you to Sulina, so you’ll get so see half the Delta. The prices are a little higher, 50€ and up.

I’d choose Sulina because there’s also more stuff to do in the city itself. Sfantul Gheorghe is a small village. A lovely one, but still small.

Oh, and coming from Bologna? I’m guessing Ryanair? So you’re gonna land in Kogalniceanu. It’s going to be about two and a half hours from there to Tulcea (7€ or so). From here to Sulina or Sf Gheorghe you can take the classic ship which will get you there in four hours, or a fast one for an hour and a half. With the classic ship, you’ll most likely be surrounded by high school kids who finish school in mid June, so you’re going to have plenty of fun.
