Sulina Observer Lighthouse

Built during the European Commission of the Danube, the observer lighthouse is currently unusable. It is located on the left bank of the Danube and the link with the continental part is made through a long stone dike.

What is fascinating about this dike is that it still holds the inscriptions of those who built it more than a century and a half ago.

The observer lighthouse in Sulina was used in the Romanian Television masterpiece “Toate panzele sus”, “All sails up”, which shows the story of a few sea adventurers who start their incredible journey in Sulina, during the former glory days of the city.

The grace of the architecture and the wilderness of its location give the observer lighthouse a mysterious and archaic appearance.

The first time I went to Sulina, several people told me to go look for the ghost at the lighthouse. The story goes that a young bride supposedly jumped from the lighthouse in the dangerous waters and is now haunting the place.

To my disappointment, when I got there, instead of the bride, I only saw two drunk old men, talking about the bitterness in their lives and the memories of places visited as sailors.

If you happen to go to the lighthouse by water, make sure to hold tight to the boat, because the waters really are turbulent there. The above story may hold some truth to it!

  2. Thank you for your kind words:D I’m glad you like it. Enjoy!

  3. Coming to bird in mid June for 3 days. Where should we stay? Who is the best bet for boating us around the marshes in the Delta? To see the most bird species? We will be coming from Bologna Italy and want to ensure we stay in the best locale and have the best and most informed birder to show us around the Delta. Any suggestions?

    Thanks lots
    J and D

  4. Hi Jackie!

I suppose you’re already thinking of staying in Sulina. If you’re not sure yet, then that’s where I recommend you start the journey because that’s where all major tracks start from, and there’s a pelican colony like five minutes from the city or so.

With the accommodation, don’t worry, you’ll be bombarded with offers the second you step off the boat. You’ll also find offers for bird watching tours, fishing and everything. For very good prices too :)

If you don’t want to take your bets though, go directly to Perla Sulina. I’ve a few friends who stayed there last year and had only great things to say. It has awesome rooms for about 30 euros a night and they organize their own tours to Lake Rosu, Letea forest, Cardon, the pelican colony, that island that is just forming 1 km north of the city and a few others. They’ve got some of the most knowledgeable guys in Sulina, so you’ll get to see everything. They have their own website, but it’s not in English. It has a French version, if it helps. http://www.perla-sulina.ro/

Besides Sulina, you can go to Sfantul Gheorghe and stay at the Green Village. The place is just perfect. Here’s their website (http://www.greenvillage.ro/trasee_turistice_en) with nice maps of the trails you can follow. One of them actually takes you to Sulina, so you’ll get so see half the Delta. The prices are a little higher, 50€ and up.

I’d choose Sulina because there’s also more stuff to do in the city itself. Sfantul Gheorghe is a small village. A lovely one, but still small.

Anyway, there are a bunch more of places where you can stay. If you need more info, let me know.

Oh, and coming from Bologna? I’m guessing Ryanair? So you’re gonna land in Kogalniceanu. It’s going to be about two and a half hours from there to Tulcea (7€ or so). From here to Sulina or Sf Gheorghe you can take the classic ship which will get you there in four hours, or a fast one for an hour and a half. With the classic ship, you’ll most likely be surrounded by high school kids who finish school in mid June, so you’re going to have plenty of fun.

    See you and have fun!
